Many have inquired as to the genesis of my name and here's the deal:
Maximilian - is of Latin origin, and its meaning is the "greatest". It's also the name of three Roman emperors and various saints. The name is popular in Italy, Latin American and Germany and since I'm 1/4 German and my parents think I'm the bees knees...it fits!
- Maximilian I of Habsburg (22 March 1459 – 12 January 1519), the son of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor and Eleanor of Portugal, was King of the Romans from 1493 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 until his death. He had ruled jointly with his father for the last ten years of his father's reign, from circa 1483. He expanded the influence of the House of Habsburg through both war and marriage,[1] but also lost the Austrian territories in today's Switzerland in the battle of Dornach 22 July 1499, where the Swiss won a final decisive victory. King Maximilian I had no choice but to agree to a peace treaty signed on 22 September 1499 in Basel granting the Swiss Confederacy de facto far-reaching independence from the Habsburgs. He is often referred to as "The Last Knight".

Maximilian Kolbe (8 January 1894 – 14 August 1941), also known as Maksymilian or Massimiliano Maria Kolbe and "Apostle of Consecration to Mary," born as Rajmund Kolbe, was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz in Poland.
He was canonized by the Catholic Church as Saint Maximilian Kolbe on 10 October 1982 by Pope John Paul II, and declared a martyr of charity. He is the patron saint of drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, prisoners, amateur radio and the pro-life movement. Pope John Paul II declared him "The Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century".

Maximilian I of Mexico (6 July 1832 – 19 June 1867; born Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph of Austria) was a member of the Imperial House of Habsburg-Lorraine. After a distinguished career in the Austrian Navy he was proclaimed Emperor of Mexico, during the Second Mexican Empire, with the backing of Napoleon III of France and a group of Mexican monarchists on 10 April 1864. Many foreign governments refused to recognize his government, including the United States. This helped to ensure the success of Republican forces led by Benito Juárez, and Maximilian was executed, after capture by Republicans, in 1867.
Douglass - is a variant of Douglas (Scottish, Gaelic), and the meaning of Douglass is "blackriver".
I was named Douglass after my Great Grand Father, Dr. Frederick Douglass Stubbs who was one of the the first Blacks to graduate from Dartmouth and Harvard Medical School.
He was named after the famous anti-slavery acitivist and orator, Frederick Douglass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Douglass) and is allegedly a distant relative. |
